The Library as a Cultural Commons

The death of the library has been frequently foretold. But, over millennia it has evolved and regenerated, continuously renewing its centrality as a cultural treasury across civilizations and eras. Modern libraries comprise more variations in program, technology and building form than ever. They increasingly hybridize the library’s role in their communities; preservation and outreach, contemplative study and community gathering, conservation and exhibition, older buildings revitalized and reimagined, tradition integrated with innovation.
