Rustic Canyon View House

Rustic Canyon View House
Pacific Palisades
California

Jeanne Chen and Bob Dolbinski are the co-architects of the Rustic Canyon View House. Although the 3200sf steeply sloping lot was considered unbuildable, the design of their home leverages the one-to-one slope to merge house and hillside in this unique setting in Pacific Palisades. Inventive planning provides strong indoor-outdoor connections at each level that lend a feeling of expansiveness to the small 2000sf house.

The house is nestled into the hill and shaped to capture light and distant canyon views using the earth’s natural insulating properties to minimize heat gain. The massing creatively complies with increasingly stringent hillside ordinances and its terra colored concrete cladding blends with the surrounding terrain. To fully utilize the small lot, the carport doubles as an outdoor gathering room overlooking the canyon.
