The Camana Bay Cinema

The Camana Bay Cinema
Grand Cayman
British West Indies

Conceived as an antidote to the rapid, auto-oriented growth on the small island of Grand Cayman, Camana Bay has grown from a competition-winning, four-village master plan into a vibrant town center that is quickly becoming the communal heart of the Island. Moore Ruble Yudell provided a wide range of design leadership from master planning through building and interior design within a highly collaborative design process.

The design concept for the cinema invokes a sense of place,' says Stanley Anderson, Director of Interiors at Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners. 'It is based on the idea that immersing yourself in a great movie is like diving into the depths of the ocean.  As you move from the lobby through the paths to the darkened theatres, you are placed further and further into the Deep. Colours, lights and ceiling fixtures simulate the view from the ocean floor to the water surface with bubbles, floating sea urchins and dappled sunlight.
